1:1 Parkinson’s Training vs. Group Classes: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get at NeuroFit is:

“Should I do 1:1 training, or should I join a group?”

Our answer is pretty simple:

It depends.

And honestly, that's the way it should be.

We don't believe every person with Parkinson's needs the same workout, the same amount of coaching, or the same level of support.

Some people thrive in a group.

Some people need the individualized attention of 1:1 training.

Some people benefit from both.

And sometimes what someone needs when they first start NeuroFit isn't what they'll need six months or a year from now.

That's why we built NeuroFit differently.

We're Not Going to Put You in a Box

Parkinson's looks different in every person.

One person may be walking well but struggling with balance and reaction.

Another may be dealing with freezing.

Someone else may have more significant mobility challenges and need a chair for portions of their workout.

And another person may have Parkinson's but still be very active and looking for a serious challenge.

So why would we give all of them the same workout?

We wouldn't.

Our NeuroFit system is built around six pillars:

  • Big Movement

  • Dual Task

  • Balance & Posture

  • Strength for Function

  • Reaction & Adaptability

  • Confidence & Success

These aren't just six things we put on a website.

They are the foundation of how we build our workouts.

Every session is designed with these areas in mind, and then we adjust the challenge based on the individual.

A movement might start simple.

Then we may add a cognitive challenge.

Then a reaction.

Then a change in direction.

Then a decision.

The goal isn't to make an exercise complicated just to make it different.

The goal is to challenge the brain and body together in ways that carry over into real life.

Movement Isn't Always Just Movement

Think about everyday life.

You're walking through a grocery store.

You're looking for something.

Someone walks in front of you.

You have to change direction.

Your phone rings.

Someone asks you a question.

You have to remember what you were looking for.

That's not just movement.

That's movement plus thinking.

That's why dual-task training is such an important part of NeuroFit.

We want to help people practice moving while processing information, making decisions, and adapting to what's happening around them.

But we also follow an important rule:

Movement first. Brain challenge second.

If adding a cognitive challenge causes the movement to break down, we change it.

Maybe we slow it down.

Maybe we simplify the cognitive task.

Maybe we change the movement.

Maybe we remove the challenge temporarily and build it back up.

We're always looking for the right level of challenge.

Not the most complicated exercise.

The right challenge for the right person.

Three Levels of NeuroFit

One of the biggest advantages of our NeuroFit system is that we don't expect everyone to train at the same level.

We have three different levels:

NeuroFit Foundations

Foundations is designed for people who need more support, more coaching, more repetition or a slower progression.

This might be someone newly starting an exercise program, someone with more significant balance or mobility challenges, or someone who needs to rebuild confidence.

We can use chairs.

We can modify movements.

We can slow things down.

We can provide more assistance.

But don't mistake that for easy.

The goal isn't to make the workout easy. The goal is to make it appropriately challenging and successful.

NeuroFit Progression

Progression is where we begin increasing the challenge.

More movement.

More walking.

More transitions.

More cognitive challenges.

More decision-making.

More reaction.

We're asking the brain and body to handle more while still maintaining quality movement.

This is often where people begin realizing that they're capable of more than they thought.

NeuroFit Performance

Performance is for people who are ready for a higher level of physical and cognitive challenge.

Parkinson's doesn't automatically mean someone needs to exercise at a low level.

There are people with Parkinson's who are extremely active and capable of challenging workouts.

They deserve to be challenged too.

Performance allows us to continue progressing strength, speed, reaction, coordination, balance and dual-task abilities.

The important part is finding the right level for you.

So Where Does 1:1 Training Fit?

1:1 NeuroFit gives us the opportunity to make the program completely about you.

If someone has a very specific challenge, we can spend more time addressing it.

Maybe it's freezing.

Maybe it's balance.

Maybe it's posture.

Maybe it's turning.

Maybe it's right-side awareness.

Maybe it's confidence after a fall.

Maybe it's getting back to golf, hiking, skiing, traveling, or simply being able to move around the house more confidently.

We can build the session around those goals.

We can also make adjustments from one session to the next based on how you're feeling that day.

That's one of the biggest advantages of 1:1 training.

You aren't trying to fit into the workout. We fit the workout to you.

But Group Training Has Some Major Advantages Too

We don't believe group training is a lesser version of 1:1 training.

It's different.

And for the right person, it can be incredibly powerful.

There is something about walking into a room and seeing other people working toward the same goal.

You start building relationships.

You encourage each other.

You see someone else accomplish something and think:

“Maybe I can do that too.”

You have accountability.

You have encouragement.

And you have fun.

That's important.

Exercise shouldn't feel like another appointment you have to get through.

We want NeuroFit to be something people look forward to.

That's why our group classes are separated into Foundations, Progression, and Performance.

You're not simply joining a room full of people doing the exact same workout.

We're creating different levels of challenge so that people can train in an environment that fits their current abilities.

And as you improve, your level can improve with you.

You Don't Have to Choose Just One

This is something we really encourage.

You don't necessarily have to pick between 1:1 and group training.

For some people, the best combination is both.

Maybe 1:1 training once a week allows us to work on specific individual goals.

Then a group NeuroFit class gives you additional movement, cognitive training, and community.

Then our NeuroFit App gives you a way to continue working at home.

Now we're not just talking about one or two hours of exercise.

We're building a system.

That's Why We Start With a One-Month Trial

We don't want you to commit to something you don't understand.

We don't want your loved one to sign up for a program because someone told them it would be good.

And we don't want you to spend months wondering whether you chose the right option.

That's why we start with a one-month NeuroFit trial.

During that month, you get a chance to experience what we actually do.

You can experience 1:1 training.

You can experience our group NeuroFit environment.

You can see how we use the six pillars.

You can experience the different levels.

And, most importantly, we get to learn about you.

How do you move?

What challenges you?

What motivates you?

What do you enjoy?

Where do you need more support?

Where can we push you?

At the end of that month, we sit down and talk about it.

Together.

Maybe 1:1 is the best fit.

Maybe Foundations is where you should stay for a while.

Maybe you're ready for Progression.

Maybe Performance makes sense.

Maybe the best option is a combination of 1:1 and group training.

Maybe you don't need as much individual training as you initially thought.

We're okay with that.

The point of the trial isn't to sell you the most expensive option.

It's to figure out what makes the most sense for you.

We Want Your Partner or Caregiver Involved

We also encourage your spouse, partner, family member, or caregiver to come see what we're doing.

Actually, we want them involved.

If you're helping care for someone with Parkinson's, you should understand what they're doing.

You should see the exercises.

You should see how we coach.

You should see how we challenge the brain and body.

You should see how we modify movements.

And you should be able to ask questions.

We're not interested in keeping the process behind closed doors.

We want you to understand the why behind what we're doing.

Because the more everyone understands the plan, the more we can work together.

And sometimes having a spouse or caregiver see what someone is actually capable of can completely change the conversation at home.

We're Going to Be Upfront With You

This is probably one of the biggest things we want people to understand about NeuroFit.

We're not going to tell you that you need 1:1 training if we don't believe you need it.

We're not going to tell someone they need more sessions just because we can sell them more sessions.

Our goal is to find the right solution.

Sometimes that's 1:1.

Sometimes it's group.

Sometimes it's both.

And sometimes the right answer changes over time.

We believe being upfront builds trust.

And trust matters when you're working with someone's health, movement, and confidence.

Take NeuroFit Beyond the Gym With Our App

We also don't want your progress to stop when you leave NeuroFit.

That's why we offer our NeuroFit App as an add-on to your NeuroFit membership.

Think of it as your way to take NeuroFit with you.

Your in-person training and group classes give us the opportunity to coach you, challenge you, make adjustments, and help you progress.

The app gives you the opportunity to keep working between sessions.

And we've built it specifically around the same NeuroFit system we use in person.

Three Levels for Every Exercise

One of the things we're really proud of is that our team has developed three different levels for every exercise in the app.

That means you're not opening an app and being handed a generic workout that may or may not fit your ability.

Every exercise has options.

Need more support?

There's a level for that.

Ready for more of a challenge?

There's a progression for that too.

And as you improve, you can continue moving through the levels.

The same philosophy we use in our Foundations, Progression and Performance classes carries over into your home workouts.

Your training doesn't have to stop because you're not at the gym.

Your Home. Your Equipment. Your Level.

You don't need a full gym in your house to use the NeuroFit App.

We've designed the workouts so they can be performed at home or in your own home gym, depending on what you have available.

That might mean bodyweight movements and a chair.

It might mean a few dumbbells and resistance bands.

Or it might mean you have a complete home gym and want a greater challenge.

We've built the three levels into the exercises so you can choose the version that fits where you are.

Going Beyond the Gym

This is really what the app is about.

If you only exercise when you're physically in class with us, you're getting a small portion of what you could be doing.

We want to give you more opportunities to practice.

Maybe you come to a NeuroFit group class twice a week.

Maybe you have a 1:1 session.

Then you use the app for additional training at home.

Now we're creating more opportunities to work on strength, balance, movement, reaction and cognitive challenges throughout the week.

The goal isn't to do more just for the sake of doing more.

It's to give you more opportunities to practice the right things.

That's why the NeuroFit App isn't a replacement for our in-person program.

It's an extension of it.

Your NeuroFit Program Should Change as You Change

The biggest mistake would be thinking that the decision you make during your first month has to be the decision you make forever.

It doesn't.

Maybe you start with 1:1 because you need individual attention.

Then you build confidence and move into Foundations.

Then you progress into Progression.

Then eventually you're ready for Performance.

Or maybe you continue combining 1:1 with group training because that's what works best for you.

And throughout all of it, you can use the app to continue training at home.

Progress means your program should progress too.

That's why we don't look at NeuroFit as a single workout.

We look at it as a system that can change with you.

Ready to Find the Right Fit?

You don't have to figure this out on your own.

That's what we're here for.

The first step is simple: schedule your one-month NeuroFit trial.

This gives our trainers the opportunity to actually get to know you or your loved one, not just read a questionnaire or make a recommendation based on a diagnosis.

We'll see how you move.

We'll learn what challenges you.

We'll understand your goals.

We'll see what you're capable of today and where we can help you progress.

You'll experience NeuroFit for yourself, whether that's through 1:1 training, group classes, different training levels, or our online app.

Then, at the end of the month, we'll sit down with you and recommend the best course of action based on what we've learned.

Maybe that's 1:1.

Maybe it's group training.

Maybe it's a combination.

Maybe it's adding the NeuroFit App to your membership so you can continue training at home.

The important thing is that we make that decision together.

No pressure. No guessing. No one-size-fits-all program.

Just a month for us to get to know you, for you to experience NeuroFit, and for us to determine what will give you or your loved one the best opportunity to keep moving forward.

If you're ready to see what NeuroFit could look like for you, schedule your one-month trial and let's get started here.
